About Us About Us photo

Who We Are
The name Truffula Seed was inspired by one of our favorite stories by Dr. Seuss: The Lorax.

At Truffula Seed Produce, located on Garden Gate Farm, we grow fresh food with no pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. We envision a local food system which is environmentally sustainable and that builds community.

As the American food system has become more industrialized, it has adopted the practice of putting profit before people. We want to be a part of a new model; one which puts people first, one which allows farmers and the communities in which they live to work together, and one which allows families to spend time together and share meals.

Farmers Josie and Shawn met at Sandy Spring Friends School where they attended middle and high school. Josie graduated from Frostburg State University, earning a BFA in photography. Shawn graduated from Earlham College, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer for 2 years in Morocco. After working on two other local farms, Josie and Shawn joined with Garden Gate Farm to give it a go!

What We Do
We are active in promoting the growing local food movement by working to ensure that our communities become better educated about their food choices and that good, local food is more accessible to people of all income levels. We accept WIC and FMNP benefits along with Westiminster Maryland's Food Sunday coupons and Food Stamps.

We practice sustainable farming techniques such as seed saving, crop rotation, and composting.

Garden Gate Farm
Garden Gate Farm, owned by Josie's parents Dave and Linda, began in 2005, when they moved to the historic four-acre property hoping to grow family as well as enough delicious food to support the four generations that abide there. This season's launching of Truffula Seed Produce, which will be grown at Garden Gate Farm, is not only an amazingly creative partnership, but also a fulfillment of our commitment to family, friends, and our community.
